Mr. Higgy takin a restBAR CAT!
gross! i hate cats or other pets in bars (or public stores), where many people are allergic to them and where they are walking all over where people are eating/drinking and their hair is flying all over the place onto your clothes. keep the cats outside!
Going Back / Going Home - Burch Walker (live at SOBs Nov 16)
much better….
When I met Butch Walker last night, I told him that I met him a couple years back and took a horrible picture. So I said I wanted to take a better one this time… Uhh.. this is not what I had in mind…
Last night I was invited to Butch Walker’s secret show at SOB’s in NYC. This was a very intimate setting with only about 100 people present. Most were sitting down enjoying $5 Grand Marnier cocktails (which was a sponsor of the night). I enjoyed this show very much, though there was not a full drum set or bass. He only played about 7 songs from his new abum… and he did a Neil Young cover song, “Only Love Can Break Your Heart.”
Just a recap of last the Butch Walker show last Thursday Nov 13th. I went with my friend Jeremy who had not really heard much of Butch before the show. It was at the Blender Theatre on 23rd street, which is a pretty intimate setting - not the smallest venue I’ve seen Butch at (nothing can really beat the Hotel Cafe!). He started off with ATL and played the next 6 or 7 songs solo, including “Passed Your Place, Saw Your Car…”, “Going Back / Going Home, “Cigarette Ligher Love Song,” and “Joan” to name a few. His band joined him on “The 3 Kids in Brooklyn” and for the rest of the night, there were 6 on stage. Butch Walker played every song on his new album, Sycamore Meadows and though the album is pretty meloncholy, he did try to keep the show upbeat by incorporating some oldie but goodies, such as “#1 Summer Jam” and “The Taste of Red,” which was only 1 of 2 songs he played off of “The Rise and Fall of…” The other song was “When Canyons Ruled the City.” The show was great overall because he exposed his fans to his new material, which is a total 180 from his last album. It’s more soft and very raw. I was suprised that he did not play his singles from his previous album, but after a 2 hour performance, I guess I couldn’t complain!
Jesse Malin was the 2nd opening act. Oh, Jesse Malin. I saw him a couple years ago at CMJ week at the Living Room and I must say I was more annoyed at him because he was an obvious Butch Walker rip off, except he was less cute, less talented and shorter. Most of his strumming patterns are the same and his sound is also very close to Butch Walker. After two years of practicing, he didn’t seem half as bad anymore. Needless to say, I guess it was an obvious choice for an opening act. He was quite entertaining after Death on Two Wheels, and he even staged a pretty funny distraction, yelling at a man in the crowed for allegedly yelling something uncouth. After a minute of yelling back at “the man” saying he has to leave or else he’s not playing anything else, he finally retreated saying, just kidding - I had to tune my guitar. I gained a little bit more respect for him then.
Here was the first opening band for Butch Walker called - Death On Two Wheels. In a nutshell, they sucked. The lead singer’s vocals were contrived, and reminded me of Creed (Obviously better because no one is as bad as Creed.) Need I say more?
